The full and perky breasts of your youth are subject to natural changes including aging, pregnancy, nursing, and gravity which can weaken the breast tissue and skin and cause the breasts to droop. Breasts loose projection and assume an unattractive shape and position, with breast tissue and nipples descending below the inframammary crease. These natural changes can leave you feeling less confident and self-conscious of your breast appearance. Breast lift surgery is a procedure that repositions and reshapes the breasts to regain a more attractive and youthful appearance.
What is a Breast Lift?
Breast Lift or Mastopexy is a surgical procedure specifically tailored to the patient’s needs and desires and aiming at restoring more youthful, fuller and more beautiful breasts. It may range from just removal of excess skin, to reshaping the breast tissue, to adding an implant for added volume and projection (mastopexy-augmentation).
Prior to the surgery you will have a consultation with Dr. Grubnik. During this consultation, it is important for you to answer one important question:
Are you happy with the size of your breasts?
This determines the type of procedure you need. If you are happy with the size of your breasts and would like them to look more youthful, then only removal of skin and reshaping of breast tissue is required. If, on the contrary, you would like your breasts to be bigger, then an implant should be placed and the breast tissue reshaped.
How is the procedure performed?
The surgery is performed in theatre under general anaesthetic and takes approximately two hours. The type of procedure performed is specifically tailored to your aesthetic desires and will be discussed with you during the pre-operative consultation.
Where will the scars be?
Scars vary depending on the type of breast lift best suited to you, and may range from scars around the areola only, to “lollipop” – around the areola and extending downwards towards the crease under the breast, to “inverted T” – extending down and along the breast under the breast.
Once all the wounds have healed, Dr. Grubnik will advise you on a scar management regimen that you need to follow to ensure that the scars are as inconspicuous as possible.
What to expect after surgery?
The breast lift is usually performed as a day procedure. Both Dr. Grubnik and her anaesthetist will ensure that you are pain free after the surgery. You will have dressings over all the wounds. Dependent on the type of procedure you may have drains placed (small silicone pipes). All the stitches are dissolvable and do not need to be removed. After the surgery, you will be asked to wear a special post-surgical bra for a month day and night, and a further month during the day. Dr. Grubnik will see you at weekly intervals to check the wounds.
How long is the recovery time?
Recovery after any surgery depends largely on the patient and their lifestyle. It is recommended to take one to two weeks off work following a breast lift, depending on the type of work you do. It is recommended to refrain from driving for 10 days to two weeks after the procedure. Sport and strenuous physical activity can only be resumed after six weeks. Dr. Grubnik will discuss the specific recovery timeline best suited for you.
Will I have sensation in my nipples?
Nipple sensation varies in individuals. In the majority of patients, nipple sensation is not affected with a breast lift.
Will my breast shape and size change over time?
The breasts will settle into shape about six months after the operation. This shape should be well maintained provided that there are no weight fluctuations (gain/loss), hormonal stimulation (pregnancy) and you wear a properly fitted bra day-to-day and a strong sports bra during physical activity. The breast shape is maintained better if implants are placed.
