Weight gain and ageing may cause diet and exercise resistant fat deposits in both women and men. Common location for these are the abdomen, thighs and hips, resulting in the much hated “love handles”, “muffin tops” and “saddle bags”. Such fat deposits are unsightly, affect the body shape and extremely difficult to address with conventional measures.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure which entails physical removal of fat cells and contouring of the body. It may be performed on any region of the body – from double chin to arms, to back, abdomen, buttocks and thighs. Liposuction may be performed alone or in combination with a Tummy Tuck, Breast Reduction or Mommy Makeover.
During the consultation, we will talk about your concerns and desires. The size and location of fat deposits will be noted and the proposed surgical plan discussed. Dr. Grubnik will examine you to exclude the presence of any abdominal hernias which may preclude abdominal liposuction.
How is the procedure performed?
The surgery may be performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation. Duration of the procedure and type of anaesthetic depends on the number of areas treated and the volume of fat that needs to be removed. The procedure performed is specifically tailored to your aesthetic needs. This will be discussed with you during the pre-operative consultation. During the surgery, the areas that need to be treated are first infiltrated with tumescent solution. This solution is used to minimize pain and blood loss. Then a liposuction cannula is inserted and fat cells removed. At the end of the procedure, the wounds are closed and a compression garment is placed to minimize swelling and encourage skin retraction.
Where will the scars be?
The scars are almost invisible – 5mm in size. They are placed in inconspicuous areas which will be discussed with you in the pre-operative consultation. These small wounds normally close within five to seven days. Dr. Grubnik will discuss the scar management with you.
What to expect after surgery?
The duration of surgery and length of hospital stay depend on the extent of liposuction. Small to moderate volume liposuction (up to 5 L) may be performed as a day case. If large volume liposuction (> 5 L) is required, you will be kept overnight for monitoring. You will have small dressings on the wounds. After the surgery, you will be asked to wear a special post-surgical compression garment for six weeks. Dr. Grubnik will see you after surgery to check the wounds and monitor the result.
How long is the recovery time?
Recovery time is minimal – some swelling and bruising is all that is expected. Gentle massage with Arnica gel helps with resolution of bruising. Swelling after liposuction takes up to six weeks to come down. Lymphatism machine sessions improve lymphatic drainage, reduce post liposuction swelling and enhance the results. Driving, work and sport can usually be resumed within a few days to a week, depending on the extent of the procedure. Dr. Grubnik will discuss the specific recovery timeline best suited for you. Skin retraction may take up to six months, so the final aesthetic results will be evident after that time.
